Are a vegan diet and a natural pain relief diet mutually exclusive?

As those of you following my blog know, I have achieved natural pain relief in no small part through attention to my diet.  I have even lots of green leafy vegetables; I have consumed huge amounts of salmon; and I have amped up the use of spices like tumeric. I’m all about the Omega 3s.

I also have eaten beef and chicken at least a few times a month.  While research seems to indicate that beef promotes inflammation, my body never has paid attention to research. Par for the course, my body has had significantly less pain and significantly greater strength when I have eaten meat.

Then a few weeks ago, I was informed that I had a big fat honking nodule on my left thyroid gland, plus a few more nodules for funsies on my right thyroid gland.  After my initial freak-out, I decided to cancel the biopsy and set out on a path to shrink this mofo nodule — through diet, meditation, energy healing, and dance.

I radically altered my diet overnight, eliminating every possible toxin.  For over two weeks now, I have been on the following diet:

  • All organic
  • All whole, unprocessed
  • No sugar, honey, maple syrup, or anything of that nature
  • No gluten
  • No fried foods
  • No soy

The first week was rough. For starters, man oh man, you did not want to be around me as my body adjusted. I constantly ran after myself with an orange essence air freshener. In addition, on the third day, I seriously thought I was going to faint. All. Day. Long.

But my body soon stopped being fart central, and my energy levels were restored. I found, in fact, that I was dancing and biking in a way that was more powerful and that took less effort.

Then the old, days-gone-by pain came back. And it seems to be hitting full force, in all these places that once upon a time were in horrific pain but have since healed. On Shabbat, I re-experienced what it’s like when you can’t move your damn head and when you play Beached Whale in bed, struggling to just tilt your body to the right or left. Now I’m getting weird pain in a place I never had it before. I mean, WTF. I would think that a pure diet like the one I’m on would promote health, not deteriorate it.

My main priority right now remains shrinking this nodule, come hell or high water, but I’m going to see if I can get my pain levels down meanwhile. For starters, I need to dance more. Second, I need to get back on supplements that were once life-savers for me – most notably, MSM. Third, I have started taking prenatal supplements, because apparently they provide all the vitamins and minerals that vegans are missing.

The jury is still out whether one can be a vegan chronic painsy and still experience natural pain relief. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Meanwhile, I welcome light, love, and healing thoughts and prayers to be sent my way.
