In the next few blog posts, I’ll be sharing some great reference books to support your path of natural pain relief. Here’s the first in the series, which will encourage you to try yoga for natural pain relief.

Yoga for Pain Relief, by Kelly McGonigal
I just discovered this book, as part of writing an article on yoga for natural pain relief. I was a hard-core yogi for several years before the car crash that turned my life upside down. In fact, the gentle yoga practice I did at home following that incident was part of what made doctors say I was fine:

Even with structural damage, I could still bend over and touch the floor with the palm of my hands. Of course, the doctors were idiots for refusing me diagnostic tests based on what they could see with their naked eye alone, but I digress.

After living with chronic pain, I found that yoga classes (hwether group or private) could be helpful or hurtful, depending on the instructor and that instructor’s attitude. What I love about this book is that the author has a very mix & match, listen-to-your-body kind of approach, instead of trying to get readers to follow the one-size-fits-all formula that a number of yoga teachers seem to have.

I feel good about recommending this book to someone who is trying out yoga for the first time. Just make sure to read everything carefully before diving in, because the author has all kinds of yogic wisdom to share about mind body medicine. And really listen to your body when you practice. Move slowly and gently, so that you can stop before it’s too late, in case you start to feel pain.
