You Don’t Dance Like You Hurt! Dancing with Pain Video #3

A couple of years ago, I was at the airport, waiting for the shuttle to take me to the rental car lot. While waiting, I danced. You know, to the music in my head. A guy was sitting on the bench, waiting for the shuttle as well, but that of course didn’t stop me. And he didn’t say anthing.

luggageUntil, that is, I asked him for help with my bags. Lifting them onto and off of a shuttle causes pain in my shoulder and can leave me with the ouchies for days on end. When I asked for help, I prefaced it with, “I have chronic pain, and it’s hard for me to lift these bags. Can you please help me?”

“You don’t dance like you have pain,” he said skeptically, as he maneuvered my bags for me.

Totally true, and exactly my point. Even today, when I had acute thigh/groin pain that left it difficult for me to walk, I was able to get my groove thang on. That’s because the music transforms my body, and also becuase I only move in ways that my body can do safely. I never, ever go into my pain zone.

no painDoing something like lifting bags, however, or even following proscribed movements in a dance class, can catapult me into a pain zone. So I ask for help with the bags, and I avoid dance classes unless they are freestyle or the like.

So here’s “You Don’t Dance Like You Hurt!” Dancing with Pain® video #3 — in which you can see yours truly shaking her bootay!
